Sofos Restaurant (formerly Yiayia Athina) was founded in 1950 by Yiayia Athina, the grandmother of Yiorgos Sofos. She was the soul of the restaurant; an excellent cook and a unique, great personality. With her vast experience she succeeded to establish the kitchen of Yiayia Athina as the most popular restaurant in Nemea and the greater area at that time.
About 30 years later, Maria, the daughter of Athina, and her husband Vassilis, joined her mother. The recipe was the same – love for cooking, continuous work, persistence to the tradition, and a great vision for the development of the family business. Maria, born and raised in the characteristically Greek town of Nemea, loves to keep active and loves being a dedicated mother and grandmother, always available for her children. She loves experimenting in the kitchen her creativity and combining different fruits and vegetables, always careful to use what is in season, resulting in the most unique and delectable flavors.
In 1994, Yiorgos Sofos, the 3rd generation, became the general manager of the family business. Together with his parents and his grandmother, they run harmonious family business, boasting more than 65 years of great cooking. In 1996 grandmother Yiayia Athina passed away, and Maria, following her footsteps and her traditional heritage, came in charge of the kitchen as the one and only chef.
In 2004, Irini, Yiorgos’ wife, following her passion, talent, love, and great respect for the traditional Greek cuisine, came to join the family team. With her passion for creativity, Irini introduced in Sofos new ideas, new trends, new tastes, and fresh ingredients, giving a boost to the popularity and national reputation of Sofos cuisine.
