Traditional Greek “spoon sweets” and jam have a special place in traditional Greek family life, and usually they are homemade. With today’s busy lifestyle however, there is often not enough time to make these delicious Greek treats. Sophia has solved this problem, here’s how.
She remembers; as soon as apricots ripened on the trees, her grandmother would open her cupboards, take out an array of jars and bottles, and flood the house with the gorgeous aroma of boiling fruit, while making her annual jam and traditional Greek spoon sweets. Sophia’s job was to crack open the apricot pits, which were then used to make a bitter almond liquor, which was offered to any guests who visited.
The grandmother handed down her secret recipes to her daughter, Lela, Sophia’s mother, who carried on the family tradition, taking jars of these delicious sweets to the restaurant, then run by Sophia and her husband George. Following their success, Sophia and George, ever adventurous, decided to change profession, and created the company “To Filema Tis Lelas” making homemade traditional jam and spoon sweets, something that was missing from Kiato and its surrounding area.
With much love and hard work, using only the best local fruit grown in the Corinthia area, Sophia and George continue a family tradition, taught to them by their elders. So, because of Sophia and George’s smart idea, there is now no excuse for not buying traditional, homemade, jam and spoon sweets!
