With the increased demand and production of olive oil owing to the ever growing popularity of the Mediterranean diet and realization that olive oil is the healthiest of fats, olive oil is not the rarity that it used to be, outside of Mediterranean countries. Olive oil can now be found in the smallest local shops and the largest supermarkets, alike. No excuses then for not substitution all unhealthy saturated fats in your cupboards with glorious golden ultra-healthy versatile olive oil. You owe it to yourself; you owe it to your body!
Olive oil with its delicious aromatic rich flavor, enhances the taste of absolutely any dish that it is added to. Olive oil is rather like wine; everyone has their own personal preference. Dark green oil, usually a sign that it is made from unripe olives, bitter and strong, the typically Greek olive oil, the best kind. Golden milder olive oil made from ripe olives or emerald green olive oil, fruity and peppery.
Use for salad dressings and dips. The strong tasting Greek olive oil goes particularly well with tomatoes or drizzle over cooked vegetables to give them that extra zing. A dressing of olive oil, lemon, and oregano is wonderful poured over grilled fish. Pour in a generous helping at the end of cooking soups, stews, and casseroles to add that extra bit of flavor.
Extra virgin olive oil has a high smoke point. This means it can tolerate high temperatures. High temperatures will spoil the flavor, therefore don’t buy expensive olive oil for frying. Replace unhealthy butter in baking with olive oil, making cakes and pastry much healthier with 25% less fat and none of the cholesterol of butter but with all the taste still intact. What can be better than that? Olive oil is a great way to get more monounsaturated fat into your diet, the benefits of which are endless: reduced risk of heart attacks, reduced risk of high blood pressure and strokes, less risk of breast cancer in women, lower cholesterol levels, and weight loss, to name a few.
Have a bottle of olive oil handy in the kitchen and get into the habit of reaching for this instead of mayonnaise, ketchup, and other unhealthy fattening ready-made sauces. Go easy on processed foods and pre-packed meals, go heavy on olive oil; your body will love you for it!
